Intern, Infectious Diseaes

Position Summary

APHL seeks two, highly motivated interns for work with the Infectious Disease program. The Intern within the Infectious Diseases (ID) Program will be responsible for providing administrative and coordination support to the Infectious Diseases team, as well as for working with an assigned staff mentor to pursue independent, short-term projects. The intern will handle multiple assignments, both in a support role as well as independently.

  • The Infectious Diseases Intern must display excellent customer service skills and will have frequent communication with other programs at APHL, members, and partner organizations. Depending on project assignments, the position will report to a Senior Specialist, Manager or Director within the Infectious Disease program; the selected supervisor will be determined at time of position offering.

Duties & Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
 1. Independent Projects
The Intern will execute up to two independent projects for the duration of their internship, focused on advancing and promoting the public health laboratory’s role in infectious disease detection and prevention. Specific projects will be assigned to the intern at the time of offer based on individual skills and interests. Independent projects may include:
  • Programming and fielding surveys on public health laboratory practices; compiling and analyzing the data; and writing short summary reports.
  • Example: Fielding and analyzing a short survey on utilization of molecular tests for identification of TB including follow-up with recipients to achieve high completion rate
  • Developing and executing marketing and communications plans around an APHL ID program, activity or product. Plans would be developed in consultation with other APHL departments. Execution would include development of materials and social media products including multiple modalities such as newsletter articles, blog posts, APHL Lab Matters articles, or APHL In Action articles.
  • Examples:
  • Promotion of Bioinformatics and AR Laboratory Fellowship Programs
  • Promotion of program specific documents such as Right Size Roadmap, Legionella testing algorithms, training course applications and webpage resources.
  • Creating and populating databases for ID program activities and creating data visualization using Microsoft products including but not limited to Excel, Access, SharePoint and Power BI.
  • Examples:
  • Designing a dynamic repository for Influenza international activities from 2007 onward. Coordinating the with Information Systems team to build the database in SharePoint.
  • Creating an international training resource website that compiles training materials and references from previous APHL workshop. This would include coordination with partners to identify appropriate resources and website design and promotion to end users once launched.
  • Developing and promoting publications or products that highlight model laboratory practices or provide guidance on implementation of quality laboratory practices
  • Examples:
  • Finalizing product titled, Laboratory Toolkit to Improve Implementation of Preferred Test Methods for Multi-drug Resistant Organisms and developing a plan for promoting the product to clinical and public health laboratories.
  • Finalizing and formatting guide on academic partnerships with PHLs to increase capacity with Next Generation Sequencing.
  • Working with ID team to review and update copy, links and information included in ID webpages on aphl.org.
  • Compiling and analyzing data from existing reports on outcomes of ID projects and summarizing in a report for publication.
  • Example: Creating a summary report for a recent project on utilization of Interferon Gamma Release Assays for Detection of TB Infection in Public Health Laboratories.
2. Administrative Support
The Intern also provides day-to-day administrative and organizational support for the Infectious Diseases team. This includes:
  • Developing ad hoc promotional materials or communications for ID activities and events.
  • Scheduling and coordinating meetings, conference calls, online meetings, and webinars, notifying the participants and sending out the agendas.
  • Recording minutes and notes from meetings and calls and making them available to program staff and participants in a timely fashion.
  • Posting, organizing, and maintaining electronic files on SharePoint.
  • Preparing correspondence, reports, presentations, graphics, etc.
  • Formatting or editing documents.
  • Supporting training workshop planning logistics such as material organization (e.g., binder organization, name badges), travel logistics (e.g. catering, hotel contracts) and packaging and shipping of materials to workshop location.
  • Working with APHL staff on other duties as assigned, with the purpose of acclimating oneself with the coordination aspects of non-profit program management.

Employment Standards- Education and Experience

The successful internship candidate must have completed high school or equivalent level of education and have a minimum of two years of experience or undergraduate education.
