Division: Infectious Disease Epidemiology Section (IDEpi)
Reports to: Program Coordinator
Location: New Orleans, LA
Description: IDEpi seeks students that will work closely with the staffed epidemiologists to study
and analyze the distribution of infectious diseases in Louisiana. IDEpi collects and maintains
statistics on infectious diseases in Louisiana, investigates outbreaks of diseases, and provides
consultation to healthcare providers, other agencies, and the general public on the prevention of
infectious diseases.
Common outbreaks investigated are:
• Foodborne diseases
• Healthcare-associated infections
• Vaccine-preventable diseases
• Vector-borne diseases
• Viral respiratory syndromes
Core Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with staff as an active member of the IDEpi team
• Conduct patient interviews
• Complete data entry into surveillance databases
• Coauthor an article for the Louisiana Morbidity Report with a staffed epidemiologist
• Attend weekly surveillance meetings, if time permits
• Maintain confidentiality of all public health investigations and patient information
Required Skills:
• Student working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health
• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Basic knowledge of epidemiology and public health
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Self-motivation and the ability to work under minimal supervision
• Works well independently and as part as a team
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
