University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders Program (Michigan FPHLP)

The University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders Program (Michigan FPHLP) is a 10-week residential program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health (Michigan Public Health) designed to encourage underrepresented college students to consider careers in public health. Students are not required to have previous experience in public health. 

Participants receive leadership training, orientation to the public health disciplines, and real-world work experience. The program is meant to foster knowledge of, excitement about, and commitment to health equity. The program includes public health and career mentorship, hands-on and practical field experience, seminars, lectures and workshops with public health leaders. 

Program Dates: May 26 - July 31, 2020 


The program includes: 
Orientation to public health at University of Michigan School of Public Health
1-week at the CDC in Atlanta, GA
On-campus housing 
Stipend 
Round trip transportation from your home to Ann Arbor, MI 
Opportunities to meet, interact and engage with diverse public health practitioners and faculty 
Engaged mentorship to guide you in the field of public health, public health careers, and the graduate school application process 
Field experience and hands-on learning in community-based organizations, governmental health organizations, health systems, and research 
Public health career exploration 
Group learning at the School of Public Health that will include seminars, lectures, and workshops. 


ELIGIBILITY:
Students who have completed at least two years (or equivalent ) of undergraduate study from an accredited college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory
Note: Students with an associate degree must provide proof of acceptance into a 4-year institution
Recent college graduates (Fall/Winter 2019 or Spring 2020) who have not been accepted into a graduate program (including medical school) also qualify
U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident or U.S. National
African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, persons with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged individuals are strongly encouraged to apply
Minimum 2.7 GPA (good academic standing) is recommended


Michigan FPHLP is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of the Director, Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE). It is part of the CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholars (CUPS) along with programs at Columbia University, Morehouse College, Kennedy Krieger Institute, and University of California, Los Angeles. All programs share Michigan FPHLP’s commitment to educating and training leaders who will become a part of a diverse public health workforce. Students may apply to multiple CUPS sites, however if students are interested in applying to Michigan FPHLP, they must complete the online application found on our website.
